Pashupatinath Temple: My Most-Visited Place in Nepal

THE ABI WORLD
Pashupatinath Temple

Among all the incredible places I've explored, Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu remains my most frequent destination. Nestled on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River, it's an immersive blend of spirituality, heritage, and everyday life.

What Makes It So Special?

  • Ancient Heritage: Worship of Lord Shiva here dates back to around the 5th century CE. The current main temple structure was rebuilt in the 17th century.
  • UNESCO World Heritage: It has been part of the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Sites since 1979.
  • Grand Architecture: The temple features a multi-tiered pagoda with a gilded roof, four silver-plated doors, and a golden Nandi statue facing the main gate.
  • Rich Rituals: From open-air cremations on the Bagmati banks to daily Sandhya Aarati and festivals like Maha Shivaratri and Teej, it’s always alive with spiritual energy.

What I Love Doing There

Every visit feels different and meaningful:

  • Attending the peaceful evening aarti by the river – the fire, bells, and chants create a soul-soothing experience.
  • Strolling across the river to the eastern terraces to watch daily rituals in a calm and respectful space.
  • Visiting nearby shrines like Guhyeshwari Temple, and watching playful monkeys in the temple forests.
  • Sitting silently by the ghats, reflecting on life while watching the sacred cremation ceremonies.
  • Joining during festivals — Maha Shivaratri draws thousands of pilgrims, while Teej turns the temple vibrant with women in red celebrating devotion.

Final Thoughts

For me, Pashupatinath is more than just a temple — it’s a place that teaches peace, devotion, history, and the reality of life and death. Every time I visit, I leave with a deeper connection to my roots and to something greater than myself.
